Cardinal Ruler / Privacy and cookies
Privacy and cookies
Two things are collected on this website: anonymous visit statistics, and the enquiries people choose to send.
This page covers cardinalruler.com only. It describes what the site actually does, named cookie by named cookie, rather than listing every category a website might use. The Cardinal Ruler application is covered separately, on the app data handling page.

Who is responsible
VMotion IT Solutions Ltd is the data controller. Registered in Ireland, company number 489707, at Unit A, Innovation House, Plassey Park Road, National Technology Park, Limerick, V94 409T.
A Data Protection Officer is appointed and can be reached at the address shown here when JavaScript is enabled, or through the contact form.
What is collected, and why
Visit statistics
With consent, Google Analytics records which pages are opened, roughly where in the world the visitor is, and which site they arrived from. This is used to understand which parts of the site are read and which are ignored. Nothing is shared with advertisers, and no advertising runs on this site.
The lawful basis is consent. None of it happens until the cookie banner is answered, and declining changes nothing about how the site works.
Enquiries
The contact form collects a name, an email address, optionally a company, and the substance of the enquiry. The submission is emailed to the Cardinal Ruler team and recorded in a log on the web server. The originating IP address is recorded with it, which is used to rate-limit abuse and to distinguish genuine enquiries from automated submissions.
The lawful basis is legitimate interests - responding to somebody who has deliberately asked to be contacted - and, where the enquiry concerns evaluating or purchasing Cardinal Ruler, steps taken at the request of the sender before entering a contract.
Cookies and browser storage
No cookie is set before the banner is answered. Declining sets none at all, and the site is fully usable either way. The one exception is the overview video, which loads nothing until its play button is pressed - see below.
| Name | Type | Purpose | Lifetime |
|---|---|---|---|
_ga | Cookie, Google | Distinguishes one visitor from another. Set only after consent. | 2 years |
_ga_2TYQETSR3D | Cookie, Google | Keeps analytics session state for this property. Set only after consent. | 2 years |
cr-consent | Local storage | Remembers the answer to the cookie banner, so it is not asked again. | Until cleared |
cr-consent-at | Local storage | Records when that answer was given. | Until cleared |
cr-motion-paused | Local storage | Remembers the Pause motion setting. Only written if that control is used. | Until cleared |
The three cr- entries are strictly necessary: they exist to honour a preference
the visitor expressed, and are stored in the browser rather than sent anywhere.
The overview video
The overview video on the home page is hosted on YouTube, a Google service. Until its play
button is pressed it is a still image served by this site, and nothing is requested from
YouTube. Pressing play is the choice to load YouTube's player, which the site embeds from
youtube-nocookie.com, YouTube's privacy-enhanced mode. From that point YouTube
may store data in the browser to play and measure the video, under
Google's privacy policy
rather than this one. The same video can be watched on YouTube itself instead.
Changing your mind
The cookie control in the footer of every page shows the current setting and changes it. Withdrawing consent deletes the Google Analytics cookies from the browser immediately, not just at the next visit. Withdrawing is exactly as easy as consenting, and neither choice affects anything else on the site.
How long it is kept
| What | Kept for |
|---|---|
| Enquiries: the message, contact details and IP address, in the server log | 24 months |
| Enquiry emails held in the Cardinal Ruler team mailbox | 24 months |
| Analytics data held by Google | Per the property's retention setting, then deleted by Google |
| Rate-limiting records, which hold only a one-way hash of the IP address | 1 hour |
Where an enquiry turns into a business relationship, the correspondence becomes part of that relationship's records and is kept under the retention terms that apply to it.
Who else sees it
- Google Ireland Ltd processes the analytics data. Google may transfer it outside the European Economic Area, under the European Commission's standard contractual clauses and the EU-US Data Privacy Framework. The same applies to YouTube, also a Google service, if the overview video is played.
- An email service provider delivers the enquiries to the Cardinal Ruler team.
- A hosting provider operates the server the site and its form handler run on.
Nothing is sold, and nothing is passed to anyone for their own marketing.
Your rights
Under the GDPR you can ask VMotion IT Solutions Ltd to:
- confirm whether it holds personal data about you, and give you a copy;
- correct anything inaccurate;
- erase it, where there is no overriding reason to keep it;
- restrict how it is used while a concern is resolved;
- provide it in a portable form;
- stop processing carried out on the basis of legitimate interests, by objecting;
- withdraw consent for analytics at any time, using the footer control on any page.
Requests go to the Data Protection Officer above and are answered within one month. There is no charge.
Complaints
Anyone who believes their data has been mishandled can complain to Ireland's supervisory authority, the Data Protection Commission, at dataprotection.ie. Raising it with the Data Protection Officer first is welcome but not required.
